Te Reo, Term 4 2016.

This term we have been learning all about the Marae. We have learned that…….

  • The Marae is an important focal point for the community.
  • The Marea is a place where tradition and customs can be carried out.
  • The Marae is a place where people can express their values with dignity.
  • There are many kawa ( protocols) that prevail on the marae.
  • Marae kawa (protocols) can differ between maraes and iwi.




Concept Definition
Tikanga the way the marae does it's welcoming
Powhiri Welcoming the manuhiri usually with a waiata
Tangata Whenua The locals of the marae who had ancestors of the marae.
Manuhiri The visitors to the marae
Turangawaewae It's your marae it gives you rights and obligations.
Whanaungatanga Family connection,Relationships, belonging.
Manaakitanga Respect the elders,care for others well being
Aroha Love,Respect,concern for others.

Actually going on to a marae and being a manuhiri to a marae I think it would be a great experience
